In one of my earlier blog posts, we touched on Shaker Heights and its reputation for exemplary education. Today, we’re going to take a look at the best elementary schools in the community. Shaker Heights’s elementary schools are overseen by the Shaker Heights City School District.
If you don’t have kids, you’re probably wondering, “Why do I need to know about schools in Shaker Heights?” Great schools are a must in any community, and their presence can impact the overall value and attractiveness of your home should you decide to sell it in the future. Let’s get started.
Onaway Elementary School
3115 Woodbury Road
Onaway Elementary in Shaker Heights mold their students from an early age to become compassionate and active members of the society.
The student population here is diverse, and several programs encourage intercultural exchanges and respect. One of Onaway’s most attractive offerings is its International Baccalaureate programme: Primary Years (PYP). This specific program is geared towards students 3-12 years of age.
Mercer Elementary School
23325 Wimbledon Road
Like Onaway, Mercer is also one of the International Baccalaureate World schools in Shaker Heights. Located in a beautiful tree-lined campus in northeast Shaker Heights, Mercer was opened in 1952 and was a recipient of a Venture Capital Grant. The main focus in Mercer is on mathematics, science, social students, and English.
Aside from academic subjects, students at Mercer busy themselves with a variety of co-curricular activities, from weekly “classroom book buddies” sessions to sports and student organizations.
Lomond Elementary School
17917 Lomond Boulevard
Built in 1928, Lomond Elementary boasts a spacious 8.5-acre campus, and in its heart a well-preserved Georgian building. In the campus are other facilities, including a learning garden and various sports areas to support Lomond’s sports teams. The student body is diverse, and parent-teacher communication and conferences are emphasized.
As for the curriculum, Lomond offers daily instruction in the Four core subjects, as well as art, music, computer instruction, and physical fitness. Foreign language classes such as introductory Mandarin are also offered.
Fernway Elementary School
17420 Fernway Road
Another one of Shaker Heights’ International Baccalaureate schools, Fernway Elementary offers topnotch education in Shaker Heights. Core subjects include math, science, English, and social studies. Additional programs are offered in other special areas, such as music, arts, humanities, and physical education.
Student life in Fernway consists of daily instruction, socializing with friends and classmates, additional instruction (for those who need it), and a wide variety of extra-curricular activities from sports to student organizations and events.
Boulevard Elementary School
14900 Drexmore Road
An International Baccalaureate World School, Boulevard Elementary has probably one of the most diverse student bodies in Shaker Heights. Of its student population, 33 countries are well represented. This cultural diversity in Boulevard has led to plenty of exchanges, with students instilled in them respect for other cultures.
Boulevard Elementary’s campus is a 5-acre property. Like most schools in Shaker Heights, the dominant architecture is Georgian, with Boulevard’s main building constructed in 1914. Well-equipped and state-of-the-art, amenities include a full-size gymnasium, a library, and a modern computer lab.
Woodbury Elementary School
15400 South Woodland Road
Woodbury Elementary serves students from the 5th to the 6th grades. It was opened in 1918, formerly known as Shaker Heights High School. All students from other elementary schools in Shaker Heights end up in Woodbury prepare the transition to middle school.
Because of Woodbury’s important role in local children’s education, academic and co-curricular opportunities are endless. All students receive comprehensive instruction in the core subjects, as well as humanities, computer exploration, and physical education.
