Spring is in the air and there’s no better time to explore the sights and sounds of Cleveland than this time of the year. Here are some events and activities to try this spring.
- Maple sugaring at the Maple Grove Picnic Area
Find out how maple syrup is made when you go on a guided tour of the sugarbush at the Rocky River Conservation. Here you can watch demos of the traditional syrup-making process, from gathering sap to sampling the finished product. The Cleveland Metroparks food truck will be selling locally-made maple candy and other maple syrup-inspired food items.
- Salamander search at the Rocky River Conservation
Search for early spring salamanders along the forested trails of the Rocky River Conservation area. Naturalist Jen Brumfield will accompany you as you explore the lush terrain and learn about the unique habits of these slithering amphibians. The terrain is mostly flat and spans 0.75 miles. Wear your most comfortable walking shoes just the same and bring plenty of drinking water.
- Bird watching at the CanalWay Center Trailhead
Spring is one of the best times to witness bird migration in Cleveland. From grassland birds and waterfowl to tropical forest songbirds and monarch butterflies, keep an eye out for the winged creatures that pass through Northeast Ohio during the spring season.
- Paper Clover Hunt at the CanalWay Center
If you enjoy a good mystery game, head to the CanalWay Center to find paper clovers hidden at various spots. This is one of several spring treasure hunts that take place in Northeast Ohio during spring. Test your luck and see if you can find all 20 paper clovers at the center.
- Spring Egg Hunt at the Cleveland Botanical Garden
The annual egg hunt at the Cleveland Botanical Garden is a spring tradition that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. This year, participants can put their egg hunting skills to the test by searching for 10 egg-shaped seed bombs scattered across the grounds of the botanical garden. There’s a surprise in store for participants who find all 10 seed bombs.
- Special exhibits at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has plenty of surprises for visitors this spring. Join the Keeper for a Day Program and shadow the professionals who care for the zoo’s animals, sign up for the Inside Tracks Tour Program to learn more about animal care and behavior, or go on a Golf Cart Cruise of the zoo for a trip to the African Savannah and the Australian Outback. Knowledgeable staff will be on hand to offer insight and fun facts about the zoo’s animal residents.
The Audubon Spring Bird Walk Series is led by experienced birders who can provide insight into the movements of the migratory birds that can be seen along the CanalWay Center Trailhead.
